Sweet Wars
In honor of National Heart Month in February, Samaritan Care Hospice of Florida held its first-ever "Sweet Wars", a dessert competition fundraiser to benefit the American Heart Association. The event took place on February 9th at the Indigo Palms in Maitland. Several local healthcare providers came together for this great cause and took part in sampling the contest desserts.

Path to Healing grief workshop and support group series
As part of the Samaritan Care Hospice of Florida’s community service and outreach initiative to provide support for the bereaved, a Path to Healing grief workshop/support group titled Happiness Happens was held on Saturday, March 24, at the Southwest Branch Library in the Dr. Philips Community Room. Founder of Healing with Time, Courtney Stewart, MA, LMHC, and a practitioner of Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), provided a presentation on coping habits that can be utilized during the grieving process.

National Healthcare Decisions Day
Samaritan Care Hospice of Florida National is a supporter of the annual National Healthcare Decisions Day (April 16). A grassroots community effort, National Healthcare Decisions Day is a collaborative effort of national, state and community organizations committed to ensuring that all adults with decision-making capacity in the United States have the information and opportunity to communicate and document their healthcare decisions. The team at Samaritan Care Hospice of Florida is available anytime throughout the year to discuss and provide information on advance care planning and advance directives.

Path to Healing grief workshop and support group series
As part of the Samaritan Care Hospice of Florida’s community service and outreach initiative to provide support for the bereaved, a Path to Healing grief workshop/support group titled Living a Meaningful Life was held on Saturday, June 23 at the Hart Memorial Central Library in Kissimmee. Sally Kopke, mental health counselor and community outreach director for Baldwin-Fairchild, was the guest speaker and spoke about the importance of self-identity after a loss, self-exploration, creating a legacy and developing and following through on your interests.

Samaritan Care Hospice of Florida recognizes the commitment and contribution of hospice aides during National Nursing Assistants’ Week.

Senior Health Care Olympics
Samaritan Care Hospice of Florida was one of the sponsors for the first annual Senior Health Care Olympics. Held on Tuesday, July 10, at Westchester of Winter Park, the event brought together 150 participants, friends and families, and members of the local healthcare community in a day of fun for seniors and the community. Participating teams competed in various challenges including archery, basketball, cycling, volleyball, shot-put and golf. Read more at Winter Park/Maitland Observer.

Path to Healing support group
Samaritan Care Hospice of Florida is coordinating a Path to Healing grief support group meeting on Friday, August 10, from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the Winter Park Care and Rehab Center. Samaritan Care’s Chaplin Rev. Rey Acevedo, M.Div., will facilitate the support group meeting, which will be held in the activities room at the Center (2970 Scarlet Road in Winter Park). Refreshments will be provided. Please call to reserve a seat as space is limited.

Path to Healing grief workshop and support group series
Samaritan Care Hospice of Florida is coordinating a Path to Healing grief recovery workshop/support group meeting on Saturday, September 22, from 230 to 430 pm at the YMCA Wellness Center in Winter Park (2005 Mizell Avenue). Guest speaker Dr. Purvi Gandhi, a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in integrative health and wellness, will address a number of topics including the benefits of exercise for physical and mental health. December Path to Healing Provides Information on Coping with Grief During the Holidays

Samaritan Care Hospice of Florida held its Path to Healing grief recovery workshop/support group meeting on Saturday, December 1, at the Jewish Community Center in Southwest Orlando. Guest speaker Courtney Stewart, MA, LMHC, and founder of Healing with Time, a private counseling practice specializing in the treatment of grief and loss, spoke on the topic of Coping with Grief During the Holidays. Her presentation focused on the importance of pacing yourself, communicating with others and maintaining physical health during the grief process. Ms. Stewart, who is an Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) practitioner, also provided an interesting EFT demonstration. EFT involves tapping specific parts of the body while repeating positive affirmations or thoughts in an effort to promote positive emotional health.
